Where previously almost every dog simply wore a collar, nowadays we see more and more dog harnesses. A dog harness has a number of advantages over a regular dog leash and certainly for the fragile neck of a puppy, but also to distribute the pulling power of an adult dog. How does a dog harness work and what should you look for when picking out a dog harness?
What is the purpose of the dog harness?
If you want to buy a harness, you first have to consider what the purpose of the harness is for your dog. Does the dog pull a lot or not, do you want to relieve the pressure on the neck or do you want to use the harness in the car? There are different models of dog harnesses and one harness is more suitable for one purpose than the other. There is a harness with a handle, a boarding harness, a chest harness, a tracking harness, a harness with a light or for example an anti-pulling harness.
Putting on a harness
When you buy a harness, make sure it doesn’t pinch. Certainly not under the armpits or near the front legs, but not in other places either. The dog must, in fact, be able to move freely. You must also ensure that if you pull the ring on the back diagonally to the back that the trachea is not pinched. Measure always the chest size of the dog and that you do just before the front legs. There are also harnesses that are entirely adjustable to the size of your dog.
Is your dog still growing?
If the dog is still growing, the owners sometimes choose to wait a little longer with a dog harness. That’s a shame because the vulnerable neck of the puppy is much better off with a harness. There are harnesses that are very affordable and prevent many injuries. Especially a harnesses can “grow” with the puppy for a while. The H harness comes from many brands and in a number of varieties. With a young dog, preferably choose those with two fasteners (not in the armpit) so the dog doesn’t have to lift his leg. The dog can not so fast escape from the H harness and some can even lock for even more security. You can also choose a dog harness with your dog’s name on it. Or a very cute dog harness for when the dog is still small.
